A fun and flexible learn to ride programme to help children stay active in the classroom, playground and at home

HSBC UK Ready Set Ride is a simple learn to ride programme for kids aged 18 months to eight years, created by British Cycling together with the Youth Sport Trust. We want schools and families to introduce pedalling to playtime and be part of a child’s learn to ride journey, helping them to become confident and happy cyclists for life.

There are three simple stages which focus on the fundamental movements required to gain coordination, balance and confidence on two wheels. All of the games and activities can easily be delivered by teachers and school staff without training - plus you don’t need any bikes to get started.

Craig Malkin, School Sports Coordinator, Links School Sports Partnership, Sheffield

" The skills associated with cycling (strength, coordination, etc.) are vital in the development of the child and the increased levels of activity from children cycling make for a happier and more able child academically, physically and socially.

Almost all of the children I work with want to ride a bike and feel a great sense of achievement when gaining the necessary skills. Many of the tasks use equipment and spaces that every school has, including a playground, hall and cones, etc. The only exception are the balance and pedal cycles, but I do think that over time schools will see the importance - especially of the balance bikes - and will invest in them as part of their continuous provision for the younger children."
